What’s The Difference Between Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer?

There are two types of thermal printing: direct thermal and thermal transfer.

Thermal is the commonality here, with transfer of heat being the guiding principle for each. Both can produce barcodes, graphics, and text.

  • Direct thermal labels are chemically treated so they blacken when exposed to heat.
  • Thermal transfer labels blacken when exposed to thermal ribbons, which are exposed to the heat.

Direct Thermal Printing

Known for its simplicity, there is no ribbon involved. Direct thermal labels have good shelf life but cannot handle abrasion, heat, and direct sunlight. Direct thermal printers do not use ink or toner.

The chemical treatment on direct thermal labels cannot handle light and heat so it darkens which makes the text unreadable. This is why direct thermal is not best for long-term applications. They are best for common barcode usage including: shipping labels; identification tags; receipts; and ticket printing.

Pros:

  • Sharp quality and good barcoding
  • Great for short term usage
  • Simple to operate
  • Long term costs are low
  • Direct thermal printers are more durable than dot matrix and laser printers

Cons:

  • Cannot handle environmental conditions
  • Remains chemically treated after printing.

Thermal Transfer Printing

Known for its crisp look and clarity, ribbons do the work here. They melt on the label and form the image once heated by the print head. Unlike direct thermal, these labels can withstand abrasion, heat, and direct sunlight.

Thermal transfer produces consistent prints every time and provides you with the durability needed to create archival-quality labels. They can withstand UV exposure, sterilization, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. They are best for: cold storage; freezers; outdoors; inventory identifications; UL/CSA certification labels, and more.

Pros:

  • Crispy and high definition barcoding
  • Great for long term usage
  • Can print on an unlimited variety of substrates
  • Long term costs are low
  • Direct thermal printers are more durable than dot matrix and laser printers

Cons:

  • Initial costs are higher
  • Ribbons are not recyclable
